The Scarlet Ibis

The past is a foreign country where they do things differently. Never judge a book by its cover because it can give you surprises when you don’t expect it. The author in this story/novel was using 1st person point of view but it was trying to give a message to the reader.

About the story.

In the beginning it was about how 2 brothers didn’t get along well just because one of them had a condition of not being able to walk, which was very sad. But the older brother didn’t understand and well he judged him quickly and didn’t give him the opportunity to show what he knew. For example in the text it said ” He was born when i was six and was, from the outset, a disappointment.” His brother’s name was William but they called him Doodle. Doodle wasn’t a “normal” kid of his age. He was different from the other kids but he was unique in his own way, but his brother didn’t see that. Doodle’s brother was tired that doodle couldn’t walk so he decided to teach him any things including, swimming, walking, climbing etc. They had some difficulties but he learned. Almost at the end of the story Doodle had noticed a bright red bird on the tree. His family went outside to see and they all agreed that the bird looked ill or was tired. After a few mins they had seen he had died, Doodle had a plan to bury him but his parents didn’t let him. Doodle eventually did bury him.In the end Doodle and his brother had a terrible fight and Doodle couldn’t take it anymore.

Acceptance versus expectation

The narrator which was a six year old at the time when he found out about Doodle’s birth, hopes of having a “normal” sibling had changed. He preferred no brother to one that doesn’t meet his expectations, and while he had to live with him and take care of him sometimes he had started a plan to kill him. After many attempts and thoughts of this happening he gave up and pushes Doodle into something closer to the he wished for. Then they try many times to achieve but unfortunately the narrator had passed his limit with Doodle. In the end Doodle passes away because of how much pressure the narrator or also known as his brother had put on him and he couldn’t take it anymore.

“Unique in my own way”

Doodle was always different from all of the other kids. He noticed that that he wasn’t going to be able to do the same activities as the other kids or play sports or anything because of his condition. He felt left out because of his peers but his family didn’t let that happen. They would make him feel part like any other kid when it was possible. The only one that didn’t understand anything was the narrator which is know as Doodle’s brother. Doodle’s brother didn’t like him or even want to be around him until he decided he wanted to push Doodle into walking even though he knew his condition and risks.

Message

The author wanted the character to see that our pride can overcome the things differently. It can push people away from us causing expectations instead of accepting them as who they are.

More discussion

The author also wanted the reader to notice that people can change but can also have problems. For example the text states ‘ Finally one day after weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds. When he fell, I grabbed him in my arms and hugged him…”

Quality questions

Why does Doodle pay so much attention to the Scarlet Ibis?

Do you think that Doodle having his condition made him unique to all of the other kid?

Did Doodle actually want to change/walk and be a ” normal” kid?

5 things about Mexico’s culture

The history behind a Mexican Dish

Since ancient times, the most important foods in the Mexican diet have been corn, beans, squash, tomatillos, and Chile peppers. The role of theses ingredients in Mexican food culture through the centuries is the basis of this volume. The early natives of Mexico didn’t have ovens, instead they heated food over and open fire, using cast iron skillets and ceramic ware. Another method was steaming. The would suspend mean wrapped in cactus or banana leaves, over boiling water in a deep pit. Frying was also a popular method. They used a metate y mano, which is a large tool made of lava rock or stone that they would use as a grinding stone or the molcajete, which was smaller, to grind and smash ingredients. The molcajete, or mortar and pestle, is a small bowl shaped container that can be made of stone, pottery, hard wood, or marble and the pestle is baseball bat shaped.

Dishes

Some of the many popular dishes are pozole, enchilladas, tamales, tacos, tostadas, gorditas and many more dishes.

Clothing

The most popular and well-known women’s pieces of clothing in Mexico are huipil but there are carious names in different regions. Huipil is a sleeveless tunic, made from cotton or wool. It is worn with a skirt. The men in Mexico would have plain shirts and trouser. They wear sandals, called huaraches, on their feet. The sun can be very hot in parts of Mexico. The men protect their heads with a larger brimmed hat called a sobrero. There are three primary types of Mexican clothing. There is daily clothing which varies according to profession and economic class but in general consists of slacks or jean with a button-down shirt or T-shirt for men and a skirt or slacks with a blouse or a T-shirt for women.

Traditional clothes

Most of the traditional Mexican clothing is dyed with natural components found in local plants. Traditional Mexican clothes are different from one state to another. Each region has different influence and cosmovision, also the weather plays a huge role in the type of fabric and technique implemented on each piece of clothing. Some cloths are designed to keep people cool in the heat of the desserts in the north part of Mexico and fresh in the southern jungle.

This is what women and men where sometimes on special occasions if they don’t wear this they wear a nice t-shirt with jeans

Holidays

Holidays in Mexico are so important and also for hispanics that live in the U.S. For example in a hispanic households people start celebrating on Christmas Eve, a tradition called Nochebuena. The tradition varies depending on the country or region, but a few things are always present during the holiday. The most important things are family and friends to celebrate with. Christmas morning is a very special day for kids and adults. Mornings are all filled with making food for dinner or for rosario para el nino dios or in English a rosary for baby Jesus.

A Special Day for Mexico

Mexico is also the best place to be on September 16, Mexican Independence Day. This fiesta – friendly holiday celebrates Mexicos declaration of independence from Spain in 1810, and its filled with national pride, colorful parades, mariachi concerts, and food.

This is an example of what hispanic people do, but not all hispanics do it, it really all depends on their religion.

A little bit about the story

“The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story by Richard Connell in which Rainsford must fight for his life while being hunted for sport. After washing ashore on an island, big game hunter Rainsford realizes that General Zaroff, the island’s owner hunts for humans instead of hunting animals because according to General Zaroff he’s ” bored” of hunting animals and only hunts humans.

“Does Hunting Help or Hunt the environment?”

This article and “The Most Dangerous Game” are similar because in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is the one that doesn’t agree with General Zaroff because, hunting for “fun” isn’t a good cause. General Zaroff is just using his hunting skills as a sport or a “fun activity” towards the island. So the article “Does Hunting Help or Hunt the environment?” says that “On the other hand, many environmental and animal advocates see hunting as barbaric, arguing that it is morally wrong to kill animals, regardless of practical considerations.” This is what Rainsford was referring to. Rainsford believes that hunting isn’t a good thing for the environment just as the people that said the statement in the article.

What Happens in the Brain When We feel Fear

According to this article “Fear reaction starts in the brain and spreads through the body to make adjustments for the best defense, or flight reaction. The fear response starts in a region of the brain called the amygdala. A threat stimulus, such as the sight of a predator, triggers a fear response in the amygdala, which activates areas involved in preparation  for motor functions involved in fight or flight.” So with this being said Rainsford’s didn’t let fear get to him mentally or emotionally. If he did let fear get to his mind it would then cause him to be more stressed out and he wouldn’t be able to survive when General Zaroff was hunting for him. This article relates to “The Most Dangerous Game” because they both talk about fear. For example in the article ” What happens in the Brain when We feel Fear” it give examples of how you can get scared. But in The Most Dangerous Game” it shows that Rainsford is actually shocked and scared when he realizes that General Zaroff hunts humans instead of animals for fun.

Summary

All of the examples and both the articles that are being said relate to the story “The Most Dangerous Game.” In the beginning of the this blog there was a summary of the article but it doesn’t summarizes the main part of the story. So General Zaroff challenged Rainsford to be hunted for three days. And if General Zaroff found Rainsford he wouldn’t be able to talk about his ” experience” or visit to the island. But Rainsford didn’t let fear get to him or anything. At the end of the story Rainsford won and General Zaroff was defeated by Rainsford. Lastly this blog shows that these articles are related to the story and show examples and definition related to the story.

Election 2020

Who will have the victory/win?

According to trends and facts supported by Real Clear Politics and Associated Press Joe Biden will win the 2020 election. Biden is winning the popular vote and electoral vote. Millions of Americans will still vote on election day. Polls aren’t closed will 6:00pm, 7:00pm, or even 9:00 pm. this year has not been the same as other years. For example a whole pandemic that American was not ready for and was caught by surprise, the BLM (Black Lives Matter protests), immigration, and other things that nobody thought would make a huge impact in on our lives.

Joe Biden Plan’s

So starting off with Joe Biden, he doesn’t have the same plans for America like Donald Trump has if he does win. For starters Joe Biden states that, “The Democratic presidential nominee is promising to reverse Trump policy moves on things such as withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement while expanding the Affordable Care Act,” with this being said many people are relying on health insurance coverage for the ones that don’t have the opportunity like others do. Also due to the coronavirus, Biden wants to set=up national contact tracing programs. He fully supports nationwide face -masks. Another topic about Biden is that his immigration thoughts are not the same as Trump’s. With that being said “He would be more likely to reinstate high-skill immigration programs such as H-1B visas that are great for the economy yet have been undermined by the Trump administration,” in this case it would make more people around the countries be able to enter the country not being worried about their immigration status. But also he want’s to have a $15 minimum wage. Biden wants to “… double the federal minimum wage at the exact time many businesses are struggling to keep doors open,” but a study projected that this would kill 2 million jobs by 2027.

Donald Trump Plan’s

According to the pros of Trump he would make more tax cuts. But according to articles(“Real Clear Politics” and “Associated Press”) there will be less federal spending and dept. Both federal spending and the national debt are projected to grow under Trump if reelected but at a markedly slower rate than if Biden wins. But those are just some of the pros that he offers. President Trump doesn’t support the fact about nationwide face-masks. He has set-up a coronavirus task force that mainly focuses on “…safety and opening up the country.” With this being said if we move on with our lives and ” open up the country” again then it could increase the amount of numbers of people infected with coronavirus. But in the article “Real Clear Politics” it says ” ..he will create more jobs and decrease taxes,” with this being said creating more jobs would be more beneficial during this time because of this pandemic going on.

November 3,2020

On this day November 3, 2020 everything could change in a matter of hours. Biden could win, or Trump could win. No body knows at the moment till late at night or in the next couple of days.

“The Gift of the Magi”

About the story

“The Gift of the Magi” by the author O Henry is a story about this woman and her husband which are called Jim and Della. Christmas Day was approaching, and Della didn’t have a gift for her husband. The only thing she had was lots of love for her husband and $1.87. Della decides to cut her hair and sell it. She receives $20 and immediately is on the hunt for a Christmas present for her husband Jim. Della looks all over town to find the perfect Christmas present. Della finally finds a watch chain that could match perfectly with Jim’s gold watch. Della decides to buy a watch chain and heads home for dinner with Jim with hopes of Jim still loving her even though she cut and sold her hair for his Christmas present. Surprisingly when Della got home Jim was right behind her. Jim was shocked that Della had cut her hair to buy him a present but he had also sold his gold watch to buy Della a Christmas present.

Digging Deeper

In the story ” The Gift of the Magi” the author O Henry uses conflict to show that not even the worst things or financial problems could stop someone from caring for one another. Della and Jim loved each other so much that they couldn’t bear the idea that Christmas was just right around the corner and they didn’t have a present for each other. In the story, it says ” Della counted it three times. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day
would be Christmas. There was nothing to do but fall on the bed and cry. So Della did it,” this shows that Della was sad that she wasn’t going to be able to afford a Christmas present for her beloved husband. Soon later in the story, “Up to the second floor, Della ran and stopped to get her breath. Mrs. Sofronie, large, too white, cold-eyed, looked at her.“Will you buy my hair?” asked Della.“I buy hair,” said Mrs. Sofronie.” The textual evidence above shows that Della did this even though her husband loved her hair and there was no money that could buy/replace her hair and the only thing she cared about was getting a Christmas present for her husband. Fast-forwarding towards the end Della finally finds the perfect gift for her husband after looking all over town. Della gets home with the hopes of her husband still loving her and not rejecting her after she had cut her hair and sold it to buy a gift for him. Shortly after Jim gets home with an expression that Della couldn’t understand. Della approaches him and says ” “Jim, dear,” she cried, “don’t look at me like that. I had my hair cut off and sold it. I couldn’t live through Christmas without giving you a gift……. “You’ve cut off your hair?” asked Jim slowly.,” the author provided this to show how Della had felt when confronting/showing Jim all of the things she’s done to get him a Christmas gift. Jim isn’t quite happy with the decision Della had made. They finally exchange gifts. Della gives Jim the chain for his watch and Jim gives Della a box of pretty combs. They then realize that both of their gifts are useless……. Della cut her hair to get the chain, and Jim sold the watch to get the combs. In conclusion, the author uses conflict to show that no problem should be intervening between someone that cares for each other.

Adding on

The Gift of Magi had two conflicts. The first conflict was that Della didn’t have enough money to buy Jim a good present for Christmas, later on in the story, Della was able to get the money for Jim. The second conflict was when Jim came home and they exchanged gifts and realized they couldn’t do anything with them and the gifts were pointless.

3 Different Types of Movies

Introduction

In the early days of cinema, genres were much more uniform and defined. Just as they were in literature and other forms of art and entertainment, people would go to the theater to watch a war film, a musical, or a comedy. The basic genres were well defined and included some of the following:

  • Action
  • Comedy
  • Drama
  • Fantasy
  • Horror
  • Mystery
  • Romance
  • Thriller
  • Western

Action Films

One of the earliest film genres in existence, the action genre has close ties to classic strife and struggle narratives that you find across all manner of art and literature. With some of the earliest examples dating back to everything from historical war epics to some basic portrayals of dastardly train robberies, action films have been popular with cinema audiences since the very beginning. It’s also an example of the evolution of the cinematic hero’s journey and the classic hero vs. villain narratives, which can be found across cinema and genres. The action film is a genre where physical action takes precedence in the storytelling. The film will often have continuous motion and action including physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. The story usually revolves around a hero that has a goal but is facing incredible odds to obtain it.

Steps to making a Action Movie

  • Write a script. Every movie starts out with the script!
  • Create Characters.
  • Figure out your protagonist/antagonist
  • Assemble the cast and crew
  • Make sure your cast is good
  • Give the right roles to the rights people
  • Find a perfect location for filming
  • Start filming – it’ll take some time, so don’t rush!

Drama Movies

Background of Drama Movies

Drama Films are serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature.Dramatic films are probably the largest film genre because they include a broad spectrum of films.

What makes a movie drama?

In film and television, the drama is a category of narrative fiction (or semi-fiction) intended to be more serious than humorous in tone. … These terms tend to indicate a particular setting or subject-matter, or else they qualify the otherwise serious tone of a drama with elements that encourage a broader range of moods.

What is the difference between drama and action movies?

Drama scripts contain about 40% more occurrences of the word ‘I’. Words in action scripts are between 6% and 9% longer on average than words in drama scripts. This difference is due to action scripts having more long words. Lexical diversity is a measure of the number of unique words in a text.

Steps to Making a Drama movie

  • Start with characters. The best dramas are usually character-driven. They have a cast of main characters (usually fewer than 10), plus a handful of supporting characters. These characters should all be very distinct from one another, and the main characters should be authentic and life-like. This way, the audience can relate to them and cares about what happens to them.
  • Introduce conflict. All stories revolve around conflict, and this is especially true in drama. The conflict could be anything – the simplest example is political conflict or war, but you might also have competing love interests, clashes in personality, or simply a struggle against misfortune.
  • Don’t forget about comic relief. Unless you’re writing a tragedy (see section 6), there should be at least some amount of humor in your drama. Otherwise, the negative emotions will get overwhelming and the experience will be too unpleasant for the reader. Give a few funny lines to your characters, or add an amusing situation somewhere to cut the tension – just make sure that this comic relief arises naturally from the story and it doesn’t feel like you’re cramming it in.
  • Example :

Horror Movies

What do all horror movies have in common?

  • Fear of death. This is the ultimate fear.
  • The dark
  • Creepy, crawly things
  • Scary places
  • Disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • Suspense (anticipation and expectations)
  • Spooky music

How Have Horror Movies Changed Through The Decades?

1960s

During this decade, small studio releases garnered critical acclaim. Additionally, many films were released in double bills, which gave the lesser-known of the two a platform that could be used to both get in front of new audiences and take some creative risks. “Psycho” (1960) and “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968) were two standouts that emerged during this time period. George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) also broke away from the pack and earned over 250 times its budget, according to Bustle.

1970s

In the ’70s, a trend that became quite noticeable was the one surrounding horror sequels. This was evident with films such as “The Amityville Horror” (1979), “The Omen” (1976), “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974), and “The Exorcist” (1973), just to name a few. All of the aforementioned titles earned at least three more sequels in each of the franchises. Several important movies from this decade also centered around religious elements.

1980s

During this unique time, the “slasher” genre was popularized. It was also a time when movies became more widespread due to the creation of VHS tapes, and subsequently rentals. However, a few movies from this time frame that people associate with the ’80s don’t necessarily evoke feelings of fear, such as “Gremlins” (1984) and “Beetlejuice” (1988). In turn, humor began to play a bigger role when it came to horror moving forward. This was also evident due to the fact that the “Nightmare on Elm Street” movies broke into the mainstream thanks to Freddy Krueger’s signature humor in his dialogue. According to Vanity Fair, “wise-cracking horror killers had become more common by the end of the 1980s with Chucky from ‘Child’s Play’ bringing a Don Rickles sensibility to the genre.”

1990s

Going back to the low-budget roots of horror, films such as 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project” were able to find their place. Cheap indies once again had the ability to earn both critical respect and positive feedback from audiences. It is said that this movie was also a big inspiration for films down the road, such as “Paranormal Activity” (2007) and “Cloverfield” (2008). Also during this decade, audiences saw the genre begin to look inwardly for humor with films that leaned into self-parody, such as “Scream” (1996). This was also the beginning of M. Night Shyamalan’s cinema takeover, as “The Sixth Sense” made its debut in 1999.

2000s

At this time, horror turned more towards a science-fiction tone with the Will Smith-led “I Am Legend” (2007) and Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” (2005) making a major impact during these years. Even though these lean heavily into action, they are still considered by some to be horror due to the elements of uncertainty that are presented throughout each.

2010s

Horror seems to be taking a more artistic turn, with films like “Get Out” (2017) and “A Quiet Place” (2018) becoming fan favorites. Stephen King has also been a staple of the films that have made a mark in these recent years, notably with “It” (2017) and “It Chapter Two.”

Wanted: More Women in Top Jobs

In the article ” Wanted: More Women in Top Jobs” the author claims that in the world more men have jobs than women. The author also claims that women aren’t taken into consideration and don’t have an opportunity like men do when asking for a job.

So according to the article it states “Researchers found that while men and women generally start out with similar career goals, women often progress more slowly. This is due to workplace structures and the demands of managing family responsibilities.” With this being said, everybody has goals, dreams, etc but when it comes to women getting a job, companies that do hire women rely more on men than on women due to women having work, and responsibilities at home.

In the article, it also says that men make more than women which is unfair when you’re working the same hours as a man, doing the same thing, and being treated unfairly on top of that.

However in the article it says “… in the 2014 survey had programs to address gender equity. In 92 percent of those companies, however, women held less than a quarter of the top jobs. A 2012 study found that while women make up 37 percent of the total workforce, they make up only 22 percent of middle managers. They make up just 9 percent of executive committee members. Only 2 percent of CEOs are women.” With this evidence it shows that women aren’t given the chance to get a bigger position at their job.
